Channeling my inner Doug; John asked why do people pay that for something they only look at?

Easy: financialization.  I picked up this book over the holiday break, some interesting arguments on the dynamics happening in real estate right now.

I hear you. These two owners basically didn’t enjoy their supermodel so that the next guy could have a better experience. On the other hand, look at all the multimillion dollar paintings hanging on walls. Why do people pay that for something they only look at? Maybe these guys got the same enjoyment just looking at their TR.

As for the price on this one (currently $200k with several days to go) and recognizing some kilobucks will be needed to bring all the seals, rubber parts, etc up to top condition, just compare that end cost to taking a high mileage version up to the same level including a lower, but still six figure, purchase price.

This car might appeal to someone who wanted it when it was new but was too young or too poor to get one in 1988. Now if only Farrah Fawcett could have been preserved as she looked on her poster that probably was on the same kid’s bedroom wall as the TR!

Not my cup of tea but clearly there are those out there who think that way.

Thanks for the kudos
1st of all you can spec the car out with no options, that’s what I basically did
My MSRP is around $330k, pay the sales tax and I am done.
I picked yellow as a color, no red car for me I would have bought a fly yellow 512 TR if I could have found one. My 575 is black.
2nd this car is well sorted out the engine is basically the F-1 engine, hybrid.
When is the last time you saw a Ferrari on the grid grenade? I have a great relationship  with FNA, they know me, when the F-50 came out I was asked to lease one, I said no thanks, I was able to get on the list for the 296 because they want buyers like me out there who drive their cars not wash and wax them to death!
In fact the list to buy the 296 is now closed in California, yep you can’t order one out there, sold out.
3rd of all I did well selling my 512 TR and I have RMDs to contend with.
I turn 72 this year and they are well into the 6 figures so why not by a car that’s a throw back to the 250LM which is a car I have always liked as a kid slot car racing.
I don’t get the car until 2023, they are out there in Europe already so the service bulletins will come shortly there after.
Oh yea fighter pilots don’t live that long so tomorrow is promised to no one.
Take car my friend and stay warm up there.

cLyDe, I really like you. We’re all good friends here on this ‘List and I really want to meet you guys one day and we can all sit around, shoot the shit and drink lots of beer. I mean lots.

But I gotta say, you’re following the same trap. You’re going to pay MSRP and buy whatever options they’re going to coerce you into getting when you configure your 296 (because you can’t walk into of a Ferrari dealership and just buy a plain-Jane car. They’re going to make you drop five figures worth on “personalizations” no matter what your status is with them).

You’re making all the mistakes. You’re buying at full price AND a first-year model release – you’re going to do the R&D for them. New models are always going to be the most expensive to insure so again, you’re paying top dollar. It don’t matter that they offer 7 years maintenance, because they’ll always get you for “little things” that they find when they’re underneath it (my buddy is BTDT with his GTC4 Lusso).

Don’t get me wrong, these latest Ferraris are really cool and within a heartbeat I’d get a Roma. BUT, only if I win the lottery, because that would be “free” money to me. I definitely wouldn’t buy one with my own, hard-earned bucks.

Peter

P.S. I mean, I’m saying all of this and I bought a Mondial. With the 348 motor in it. From an official dealer...

P.S.S. Me when I see a Roma:

Back in 1988 these were going for over list

So someone paid at least $200k for this possibly more ( Brian K would know)

Insured it for 34 years let’s just say for what $2 k a year

That’s $68k odds and ends at what over 34 years at least $15k

So we are looking at $283k in then year dollars

Let’s see what this bomb brings because you can’t drive it without going thru it totally and having owned one for 24 years I know WTF I am talking about

I can’t believe people who has that type of money back then would do this

Incredible
