But, using terminology like “idiot”, “stupid” and “he f^cked up”, isn’t endearing.

Sit back, this will be a bit wordy...

This GT owner isn’t the only one. Remember, these cars were coming out of the wood-works a couple of years ago, because one or two sold for at-the-time, big numbers at the auctions. Then it became a penis-measuring contest with all of the other owners who thought they could cash in, because all of these cars had three figure odometers. And cash-in they did. All of the other guys who missed out when new now wanted their second chance and stood in line to out-bid each other. There was a lot of money floating around burning holes in pockets.

In much the same way as people are buying Apple, Tesla and FB/Meta/Whatever-its-called stocks today. Why the hell buy now? How much higher do you think it will possibly go?

People aren’t really doing this to “invest”. They’re playing a (rigged) game. The smart guys have figured out the patterns to get the timing right, that’s all. It’s not long-term growth, it’s short-term gain and that’s just the world we live in. (Classic) cars are just another now-appreciable asset, because at least you can insure them.

Getting back to the Ford, my buddy in the club TRADED-IN his Daytona and his Testarossa to get a brand new 550 Maranello. He kept that car only for a few years, sold it and took the proceeds to buy a brand new Ford GT. He still owns it to this day and it’s his most favorite car he ever owned. Has a ton of mileage on it because he’d ship it down to California when he’d snowbird down there, every winter. It’s basically his daily driver.

He doesn’t speak too highly about his Ferrari ownership, but, he owned some of the greatest Ferraris ever and some guys would give their left nut* just to own the cars he had. Now, if he kept the Daytona and TR, he would’ve made more money, but in the end, they were just old, used cars and he was tired of being raped every time he’d go to the dealer for services. It wasn’t fun anymore.

This reminds me of the aircraft-speak thread and I’ll give cLyDe some slack, but again, it’s the choice of language that stirs the pot.

FWIW, I paid the USD-equivalent of $17,000 for my 308 GT4 back in 2000. Back then, there was an open HATE for this car. I even got the “oh, it’s only a 308” snobbery at a few of the shows I attended. Yeah, it bothered me, but I was 24 and I owned a Ferrari. Paid cash for it because at the time, I would’ve spent more on a Toyota Celica. I paid $84,000 CDN (roughly $66K USD) last year for my Mondial, which, oh look at that, was market value. I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t be able to buy a Dodge Hellcat for that kind of money!

Buying the GT4 was a smart financial move, but I didn’t know it at that time. I just bought it because I fulfilled a life-long dream at a very early stage in my life. The Mondial? Well, I couldn’t care less. I had the money, I wanted another Ferrari and it was available.

I’m happy.

Peter

(*Fun fact, speaking of left nuts, with most men, their right testicle is larger and hangs lower than the left one, so maybe that’s why it’s always worthwhile to give away in exchange for a desirable object)

Anthony,

Likewise, your being intent on protecting the "unknown Ferrari owner" and Brian are backed by good intentions (I sincerely believe that).  But your judgement of others is also flawed.   Having walked in Clyde's shoes (née sat in his ejection seat) and knowing cLyDe, the person, he has no need for anyone's affirmation (well, maybe Denise's).   When you have confidence in yourself, you don't need averment from others.   Ask yourself, WHY does it bother you..? every time.  "Let it go man".  Reflection is for those with troubled minds.

We all have these cars for some level of enjoyment.   Anyone who is in it as an investment in anything but their own well being is probably in for a rude awakening.  But even then, it's not all gloom and doom.   Case in point:  Rob Garven, Jr.   I count Rob as a dear friend.  He may have put more money into 308GT4s than anybody, ever...  Same for his time...  and it's a pretty sure bet he won't get it back.  Pointing it out is not a dig on Rob, or his cars, it's just a statement based in numbers.   But Rob is the happiest, most dedicated, loyal Ferrari owner I know.  His enthusiasm is infectious... down right boundless.  Rob is Tifosi!!  A lot of people would (and do) pay good money to be as happy as Rob with his cars.  I'm one of them.   A lot of people spend a LOT more and are miserable when they have to sell them at a loss. Speaking that is just fact, no dispersions cast.   It's not that I'm better than them.  I don't know them.

Making serious coin on high end Ferraris is for those who really don't need the Ferrari money to begin with.  They are merely frivolous playthings.

I believe in the Good Book too, but sometimes your inspiration and direction needs to come from tragedy...Greek Tragedy, that is.

How do YOU know HE didn't enjoy it?  Maybe he enjoyed it in a different way.  He ain't you.  Maybe he put it in the great room of his modern style house like a piece of art.  I wouldn't do that but it isn't my money so if that brought him happiness, more power to him.

And he crushed inflation so he did pretty good.  So, maybe, he liked to see it every day as he ate his cheerios AND he made money.

You know Clyde, with the best intentions, you might want to reflect on stuff like this.  Why does it bother you?  Or, why do you care?  Or, why do you feel the need to judge him?  From my perspective, you are constantly looking for affirmation.  Clyde was a great pilot.  Clyde is a great driver.  Clyde always made the right purchase at the right price.  Let it go man.  As the good book said, "Eat not the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil".  It applies to right and wrong and every other dualism.

He F%cked  up thinking it would be a million plus car

So he got outed

You sell cars so your emotional tied to this industry

Not me

I see it for what it is

You want people like me to go into your place and spend huge sums of money

On rolling stock that when I want to sell it back to you

You give me pennies on the dollar

When I took my 512 TR to the local dealer with 111k on it

An they knew how I maintained it and had service records on it and ask for an appraisal

They offered me $40k

And no I m not going to tell what I actually sold it for unless

Brit tells not me

Yea that’s you and your industry

Your sell dreams covered in you know what

I like you but stop thinking your not out to extract the most from the guy

Coming thru the door and telling him the truth about the car market!

That’s why carvanna and the rest of the online car sales people are doing so well

And car dealers are a dying breed.

But here is the problem. You could say that about anything you have, with the benefit of hindsight. What if your stock pick wasn’t Apple, but Enron?  Then there would be zero money left.  If you didn’t buy your house, a 512TR, any of the the other cars you owned since 2005, didn’t buy clothes, didn’t go out to eat etc then how much money might you have had IF you invested in the stock you would have invested in, but in 2022 didn’t invest in?  And what guarantee is there that he or you or whoever would have held it until 2022?

Where is the line between investing every dime you have an living like a pauper your entire life, and buying cars you got to enjoy, a house that housed your family and built memories, dinners with friends and family etc?  At what point do you stop looking at numbers on a screen and take out profits to enjoy your life?

These comparisons are useless. Did you buy Apple in 2005 and hold it until today?  If not how are you smarter than they guy who owned and enjoyed a Ford GT for 17 years and made money on top of it?

Ok so this idiot paid $166k after taxes etc my guess $175k in 2005

That’s what 17 years ago!

Add insurance and storage fees

And the car is only bringing right now under $500k

If this guy would have put that same amount in the market it would be well over $1 million

Can’t fix stupid….
