I just need to cover the front fog lamps to protect from breakage. I’m not going to find anyone who can do this in Sweden ( there are exactly 13 of these cars in the entire country) nor who would have a pattern for the lens. They are relatively flat, I’m going to have to do it myself.
Do you not cut the film with scissors to the right shape and then apply it? Is there more to this than that? Thanks for everyone’s input and advice. BR in Stockholm On 18 Feb 2022, at 05:50, Buxton Motorsports <buxtonmotorsports [at] gmail.com> wrote:
one note is that this is VERY difficult to install properly if you don't have a lot of training and experience. You could spend hundreds on film, mess it up then have to buy it all again. It's much tougher than window tint, which novices always mess up. It's worthwhile to pay a professional to provide and install it. Many will have heat booths that the cars go in after and help it cure.
Expel also makes really great films, although I don’t know if they sell them direct to the public. As Scottie said, most PPF shops will cut their patterns for you and you can choose just the light protection if you want. It is generally
thicker film than what’s used on the paint. I had it put on my 2006 Ram SRT-10 truck when I bought it. Replaced once in 2014, then removed last year before I intended to sell the truck. 330,000 hard miles and zero marks on the headlight assembly.
I should’ve done that to my 928 right when I got it. One fog light caught a rock and broke the glass. Replacement lens nearly $400.
3M scotchguard paint protection film. Comes in a 8mil
3M also makes a heavier duty 8591 film that is 16 mil - that is more for extended body work (think the protection on leading edge of the rear wheel well bulge on 911 Turbo). Might be too thick for headlights.
In any case 3M is quality product
Lots of people will precut the shape for you so you should have options. Install is pretty easy, like putting the decals on models as a kid, just use lots of soapy water and squeegee thoroughly
The stuff the used car guys use is crap and overpriced. They like it because it hides flaws. Use whatever Clyde uses. That must be the best.
Hi guys,
What is the recommendation for a clear protection film I can use to cover the fog lamps on the 512tr. Protection from stone ships and breakage is the intent. I’m in the USA in 3 weeks and want to buy it there ( hard to find this stuff in Sweden) so if anyone
knows anything I can mail order, buy on Amazon etc I would appreciate it. Not sure what works best or is easy to apply as I have never used this stuff before.
Recommendations?
