Insurance can vary from state to state but here in IN (and I know
many other states), if you have a vehicle registered in the state
and you buy another vehicle (or multiple other) then you're
automatically covered for 30 or so days. You don't even have to
immediately notify your insurance co. you bought another car. Of
course that isn't the smart thing to do - and when i sell anything
I always get a copy of the customers policy even though I don't
legally have to. Half the time clients who come into town will
bond insurance in my office before they even leave with the car.
Sounds like this guy is definitely an idiot - I'd guess his
"clerical error" no license is a DUI. I don't see too many people
who lose their license by accident.
And from comments he had been driving the car to different spots he definitely knew how to drive a manual.
B
Brian -
According to one article I saw he did not have an active auto policy on the car (nor had he registered in despite having it for several months and having a license that had been suspended, for another court-related issue WTF??) Article said he claimed it was covered under an umbrella policy. Of course so little makes sense in the story - but in my experience an umbrella policy requires an underlying primary source of insurance — no primary = no umbrella.
So far, only rumor I’ve heard was that the guy is a bit of a Nuevo Riche asshat who has shown up several places showing off his car - so, so there is likely documentation that he has had it on the road several times since its acquisition, despite the lack of any of the required legal paperwork. I suppose I’d feel worse if everyone said he was a great guy. So far, no one has said that.

This happened across the street from my buddy’s house. He thinks he knows the guy - expect some juicy details later.
For sure - unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered - oh, and no way he was only going 35. At least a half dozen reasons, on the face of the story, that this guy should not have been driving that car on the street. Don’t buy the “I can’t drive stick" argument either. Looks to me like another classic case of too much car, too little talent — and ion the reports on then paperwork are true, a VERY expensive lesson, as no “umbrella” policy is gonna cover the loss if there is n to a primary insurance policy in place. At least it was not a Ferrari.
In sadder news, looks like a 355 challenge had a run in with a Range Rover in England.

Nothing tops these "Florida man" stories.
Only thing missing was that his "niece" was in the car with him...

Hopefully he's got good control of a pen, he'll be writing some checks.
