It was no myth, I was of car buying age then. Any 2 seater was considered a sports car and insurance coverage was more $$ than a 4 door,
Ferrari, Maserati & Lamborghini made a niche vehicle for this time. And the owners cared as these were entry level cars… 
Of course the Ferrari was the best car but the bumper had to go!

Jokes aside, I don’t know if it was urban myth, or actual regulation, but all of these types of “sports” cars that had rear seats, wasn’t that so it wouldn’t qualify as a “sports” car and therefore have a lower insurance rate?
