Picture this – non-fitting fuel sleeve? In 1967, Indy Raceway, Richie Ginther was practicing with Dan Gurney’s AAR team at Indy for the Indy 500.
During practice, going down the back straight, a fuel line broke and soaked him with fuel. He politely pulled over, rather quickly tho, got out of the car, took all his clothes
off and retired, as a driver, on the spot.
Loose fuel lines = a stinko garage and, better yet, fire. The gift that keeps on giving.

Fitting a rubber isolating sleeve over a fuel pipe is not a big deal.
Yes, something like this should have been caught while assembling pre-production cars, but assembly-line people are not mechanics.
At least the doors didn't fall off the car while driving... Yet.
