They are really neat devices. Not sure if they are better than a MAP sensor (which is a simple air pressure switch).
The issue probably stemmed from too much of that oil accumulating on the sensing wire. At shut down, there is a circuit which heats the wire to red hot and this burns off any crud and residue that will accumulate. But too much and then it'll just bake on.
I guess you sprayed a ton of brake cleaner in it?
