Dunno if Erik was being ironic or not, but let's take a look at the numbers - by crime per 100k residents, instead of the actual # of incidents: Huntsville Memphis NYC Nat Ave. Murder: 3.6 16.1 7 5.5 Forcible Rape: 56.26 68.04 17.63 32.2 Robbery: 219.6 577.9 300.9 136.7 Agg. Assault: 391.4 890.8 361.9 291.1 Burglary: 1163.9 2240.7 322.2 729.9 Larceny Theft: 4559.3 4935.4 1530.8 2365.9 Vehicle Theft: 560.2 1124.7 260.1 421.3 So, you're way more likely to get killed in Memphis. You're twice as likely to get murdered in Huntsville than NYC. You're more likely to get raped, assaulted, burgled, have stuff stolen and have your car stolen in either southern city than NYC. In fact, Memphis is by far the most crime-ridden of the three (Huntsville is better, but is worse than NYC except for murder and robbery). Surprisingly, NYC is below the national average in a lot of categories. Another way to look at this: For "CITIES OF 500,000 OR MORE POPULATION: (32 cities)", NYC was ranked the FOURTH SAFEST city in the country, while Memphis was ranked the FOURTH MOST DANGEROUS. This is something of a surprise, and a complete shock to the system for those of us old enough to remember NYC in the '70s. Oy, what an improvement!
