My Diablo is a 99, which means the real engineering behind it took place during the Chrysler ownership of Lamborghini. I suspect this helped a lot of things in the same way that Ford ownership helped Jaguar. Having a big company with some testing standards and some idea of how to head off warranty costs can be a good thing for a small manufacturer.
The only known issue that I know of for late Diablos is that the clutch rod at the slave cylinder fatigues and breaks, which does strand you. But the replacement part is only like $140. I have only done a little work on the Diablo in the two years I've had it (it's basically needed nothing besides some connections jiggled/Stabilant 22), but in that time it strikes me that everything I've encountered is more solidly built and from better materials than the 355. Perhaps the 355 leans a little too far into the F1 formula of things - make it just solid enough to last the next race.
I also think, since they've had a waiting list for as long as anyone can remember, that Ferrari has no impetus to improve their materials or processes. They're perfectly happy to deliver a 90% engineered car, knowing that 90% of their production will be out of warranty by the time problems are discovered. I think this has been better since the 360 debuted, but I don't have personal knowledge of any later cars besides what I read here and on FChat. Since Lambo has had to work harder for their customers, they are more intent on retaining them and so are more responsive to service issues and material quality.

Nice and compact posting CP. Thanks. Um, why do you sense Lambo is better build quality? Better factory conditions? Fewer cars clamored for and therefore the assembly line is not so fast? (gotta love ol Henry Ford and his rheostat that could speed up the very early Ford assembly line - heh heh) Just the way it is?
Also - having never driven a 355, so have never had to pay attention to blind spots, how is the 355 GTB? What about the Lambos?
Thanks, DOUG

I have experienced every known 355 issue except the valve guide problem: 1) Melted headers (rebuilt by QVLondon) 2) Bad seat sensors (3 times, spiders only) 3) Leaking shocks (rebuilt by Delta V) 4) Melting interior (will probably replace with Valence carbon fiber) 5) Alternator Issue (ground strap added)
Plus a couple that are rare: 1) Broken timing belt (my fault for waiting so long) 2) Broken valve springs (bad luck)
Luckily all of the common problems have been irritating but not disabling,
but if I were shopping for a 355 I would either make sure the above issues
have been addressed or I would put aside a serious chunk of change for
addressing them. I will probably have spent $10k on stuff to make this car
the way Ferrari should have made it by the time I'm done. If you count the
rare items, more like $25k.
I still love the car, but if I had it to do over again I would probably wait
another couple of years and buy a depreciated Gallardo spider. My experience
with my Diablo leads me to believe Lamborghini is head and shoulders above
Ferrari in terms of build quality and engineering. Flame on!

Rick go! Talladega is about Ferriari's,Your City
Although for many years I have said the next RehkopfMobile will be a
Yellow/Black 355 GTS, I knew about both these issues. However, how
pervasive are they? Should I start thinking 360? Are there 360 issues too?
I haven't heard because this wonderful List and the Listers knowledge has
been missing from my life.
I hate to see Rick go!
Talladega has everything to do with Ferrari's!
My City is no different than yours, it only takes one crime for it to be
personal, and every City has a crime.
Thank You
