Each team gets a set or two of tires with red sidewalls. The rest of their allotted tires have the normal black sidewalls. The Red tires are super sticky compared to the regular tires. The red sidewalls are used so everyone knows if you're on the stickies. The Reds will decrease your lap time and perhaps allow you to overtake and gain a position...BUT...they may only last 8 laps instead of 20. Kind of like having an extra 50hp but only for a short time. A team is required to run their red tires but can choose to run them at any time during the race.
Personally, I like the red tire idea. It will test the strategy skills of each team as they will have to decide when is the best time to use the Reds. At the start to sprint out ahead? At the end to gain that extra points-paying position? If you're chasing the guy in front of you do you use the Reds as soon as you catch him? Or try to get by him on blacks and save the Reds for later? Think what this will do on the tracks where passing is difficult. When do you run the reds at Monaco?
