Re: [NFC] 2003 BMW M5?

The main thing is the service record. BMW competes with Japanese products by championing the stupid 15,000 mile oil change etc. Make sure the car was serviced as if the owner meant to keep it. Also you WILL need to replace the coolant tank at 50,000 to avoid the inevitable crack where the return hose enters the tank. Otherwise mostly minor, infrequent issues.

Oh yeah - you want a manual transmission, avoid the paddles.

Dennis nailed the price. Paid 41 K for mine, perfect @ 26,000 miles

The E39 M5 is an awesome car. There are some known issues with it, much
like with our F-cars. If they're addressed, then the car should be fine. I
love 'em. Only downside is that they are too small for my needs (back seat
needs to be bigger). Dave Handa should be a wealth of knowledge. Lastly,
from the E39 Yahoo group list and the UUC BMW list, I'd say that the FMV for
an '03, 41k miles, well-optioned, should be about - $40k. Would probably go
for slightly less than that at auction. '01s with more miles are
wholesaleing in the mid-high $20k range. Just my $.02, the "pro" dealers
out here can probably provide you with recent auction results.

I'm looking at a BMW M5 that my across the street neighbor is selling. It's
a 2003, Black/Black, with 41K miles on it. I drove it today, and my neighbor
is letting me keep it over night, so I'm driving it out to dinner with
fellow lister Dave Quick.

It has loads of options (PDC, heated seats, nav, rear and side shades,
sunroof, euro-style turn signals). He's asking 49K. Is it worth it? Still
got 1 year / 10K miles of warranty. NADA.com says 51,675 is avg retail, and
45,975 is avg trade in. He's not trading it in, and has it listed for sale
in the paper.

It was a BLAST to drive today, esp when I turned off the DSC!!!!!!!!!

Thoughts on this car from those who are Bimmer experts?

Steve
