Actually it is not just the coolant expansion tank, but also the radiator
itself. My radiator went south at around 60k miles... It is not disabling
when they crack, so I would just leave it be until it goes. But many
mechanics recommend replacing the radiator, expansion tank and thermostat at
between 75k and 90k miles.

The main thing is the service record. BMW competes with Japanese
products by championing the stupid 15,000 mile oil change etc. Make
sure the car was serviced as if the owner meant to keep it. Also you
WILL need to replace the coolant tank at 50,000 to avoid the
inevitable crack where the return hose enters the tank. Otherwise
mostly minor, infrequent issues.

Oh yeah - you want a manual transmission, avoid the paddles.

Dennis nailed the price. Paid 41 K for mine, perfect @ 26,000 miles
