Hi Pat, You wrote:<<Pick up a copy of Nigel's

I used to follow F1 rabidly back then - and it seemed like whenever things went right Nigel said the win was due to his brilliance. When he lost, it was because his equipment or car was crap and his team &/or opponents conspired to work against and played unfairly.
I remember seeing him get out of a car at the end of the race and if he won he bubbled with happiness but if he crashed out or finished down in the order he looked *terrible* - he looked like someone who had gone 15 round with Mohammed Ali!
Also, Nigel was a part-time deputy - don;t know what the official term is in UK - and some magazines made light of him pulling speeders over. But in my thinking, putting a badge on someone like Mansell was a mistake.
I brlirvr I also heard that Nigel was good enough to go pro in the world of professional golf but he chose F1!
But IIRC, M Shumacher was given an opportunity to drive in a F1 race at Spa in 1993 (?) and when he qualified, he let everyone nearby know it was because of his utter brilliance, No doubt he was as good a he thought - 7 World Championships proved that. And if Ferrari had not had 2 *very* uncharacteristic equipment failures this year he would be celebrating Championship #8.\
Oh well, time passes & things change yet they remain the same --

As I recall, Mansell said he closed his eyes and pressed the gas on that pass in Mexico.
I used to work with someone who had raced Mansell in Formula Ford. Nigel's
dad had built my friend's engine. Nigel was a jerk even then. The only
reason Nigel is still alive is some folks kept my friend from killing him
for some dubious racing activity. Ask Mario about Nigel... worst teammate
he ever had. Nigel wanted the entire team focused on him and would not
share anything. Probably the main reason Mario retired - just wasn't worth
it to deal with Mansell. Want to have fun? Pick up a copy of Nigel's
autobiography and count the number of times the word "I" is used.
Prost was fast, just so smooth the speed was not always evident. Grab a copy of Lap of the Gods. There are some segments with Prost driving. The first thing you notice is how damn smooth he is... like a Sunday drive. Then you realize how damn fast he's going. No sawing at the wheel, no saving slides, just smooth and fast.
Senna's comments about the poor activity around 1989-1990 is partially aimed
at Prost, and also obliquely at himself. In the last race of 1989 Prost
turned into a corner just as Senna was trying to pass him, eventually taking
out both of them, leaving Prost as world champ. Of course, if you view the
incident from an overhead view you see Prost turned in quite a bit before
the corner, just to take out Senna. In 1990 Senna returned the favor by not
bothering to brake behind Prost and taking both out in the last race,
leaving Senna as world champ. The next year Senna admitted to it.
I chuckle at folks who berate Michael as if he was the only driver who ever
did anything wrong in winning a championship. Many of those folks think
Grand Prix racing started in 1994. And never heard of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s
dad.

I've been following motor racing since the mid-1950s and one of the two
greatest passes was by Nigel on Berger during the Mexico Grand Prix. It was
on the 185mph sweeper coming onto the front straight. Mansell faked the
inside, and while Burger protected, he passed on the outside. It sounded
like David Hobbs crapped his shorts on that one. The other I got to see in
person. In the late going of the 1967 Riverside Indy Car race Dan Gurney did
the same to Bobby Unser at the end of the 200mph back straight. Dan made it
look so easy that I was embarassed for Unser. Gurney won that one too.

I just wish mansell had went to Nascar, I always liked how he'd jump out the
the car and go punch someone even if it was his fault classic. I had a
friend who knew him and said he was in so much pain in his trailer he had
ice on his back and could bearly move then when he came out he straightened
up as if nothing was the matter, stiff upper lip and all that! :-)

Prost was a prima-donna prick.
Also, he won many of his races on strategy rather than outright speed, so I have very little respect for him.
As far as the technical differeces between Prost and someone else's car, most likely, we'll never know.
