Another option is to try AVG at www.grisoft.com where you can download the 
personal user version for free - it take some hunting to find the link to 
the free anti-virus package - it's near the bottom of the page IIRC.  I've 
been using it for several months and I have had zero problems.  I ran Norton 
for 10 years +/- and their frustrating tweaks that caused enough problems 
that I looked for &  found an alternative which works perfectly.  It also 
updates itself with out any user input.
It has not let any agents or virus through.

This probably isn't the answer you are looking for, but the easy answer is

to switch to Norton (Symantec).  Like you, I was having some annoying 
issues

with McAfee, so a little over a year ago (when it was time to renew), I

switched.  This was a tough decision for me because I was a very long time

McAfee user and believer.
Now, Norton has some little annoying issues of its own (slower to scan

incoming and outgoing e-mail), but I seam to find them way less annoying

than the McAfee issues I was fighting.  So, I am basically happy with 
Norton

and glad I switched.
However, I also run Prevx1, Spybot, and Ad-Aware SE.  I find that these 4

prevent or fix just about everything.  I just recently got Prevx1 and I am

still evaluating it, but so far I really like it.  I especially like the

event notification (basically, every time a program launches, terminates, 
or

accesses the web, I get a small notification popup that lasts a second or

two and goes away) and the recent activity (a log book of programs 
activity

that you can go check).

That's not it. I'm having the same problem you are. Happens on my IE6
machine at work, but did not happen at home with either IE6 or 7. I know
why
it's happening (any time a program moves a web browser window or opens a
new
web browser window in a different spot), McAfee complains that the
registry
is changing, but the registry is just tracking where to open the web
browser
next time.
It's harmless, so you can continue to click Allow, but I, like you, would
certainly like to know how to shut it off. That damned bell sound is
getting
really irritating.
