Steve:
Notes on the 4.4L V8/6 Spd combination:
1. Chips. The main advantage of the Dinan chip is removing the 155 mph speed limiter. Jim Conforti has not offered a product for this engine to date, to my knowledge, one reason being the gains to be had beyond the factory chip are minimal unless you increase airflow with a new exhaust/intake setup. And that is hard to do as well.
2. Beware the oil soaked K&N filter. All those oil particles coat the film of the MAF sensor downstream and will cause grief. Also filter must be cleaned and re-oiled after 3,000 miles or you do better with a paper one.
3. The E39 V8 M5 got to 400 HP by adding 400 cc of swept volume. Only other way to get big ponies is supercharging, or nitrous. Then you have drive-train reliability issues.
4. Here are the two big tips to get more kicks on Route 66: delete Clutch Delay Valve from the manual transmission setup and swap the 2.86 differential for the torque monster 3.15 that comes standard in my car and the M5. This drops the theoretical top speed close to 155 anyhow so no need to chip. Ask me how I know.
5. The 750 V12 has 296 HP. The stock 540i V8 has 282 and my El Tweako factory setup 290: 2% less power than the V12 and way less mass. The V8 likes revs and will imitate a V12 just fine at 3500 - 5500 RPM. Rev limiter is about 5300 in 1st, 6300 after that. I suspect Koala installs the manual EPROMs.
6. The Germans are adherents to the Church of EcoWhackiness so they love to recycle. Your radiator expansion tank is made of recycled plastic. After enough heating/cooling cycles it will crack where the hose fitting emerges, causing instant coolant loss and more very bad things if you don't shut down immediately. This happens around 60,000 - 65,000 miles. I just replaced my expansion tank proactively at 40,000 miles. There are several other minor pecadillos to know about, as with all cars, but I will stop here since this is a Ferrari list after all.
Oh yeah: BMW Marketing will tell you about 'lifetime fluids'. They are right, the fluids last for the lifetime of the part. Then you buy a new transmission. I know you and know you are way too smart to be taken in by this garbage. You have only been married twice so you are at least twice as smart as me.

Envious. Dang. Maybe I'll come out and we'll drive it back to Seattle

Already decided. Koala is doing the 6 speed conversion, and installing a UUC
exhaust and Hamann rear valance. I'm gonna pester Jim C. about software. :)

Unfortunately with Dinan you are paying a pretty hefty premium for the name.
I'd research UUC, AA, Koala (I don't think that ECIS www.ecisbmw.com does
stuff for the 7 series but I can find out, Kenny is one of my closest
friends.) for what you need. These are all good guys!! Don't get me wrong,
Dinan makes nice stuff, just at a premium.
FWIW, YMMV....

If Conforti offered performance enhancements for it, I'd go with them.thing
Maybe Dinan for the suspension...

There is all kinds of stuff out there for the car. I'd stick with Dinan
mods, although a Remus exhaust does sound great on BMW's!

This is pretty much gonna be her car, that I'm gonna steal when I needanAnypark in a parking garage. :)
But I am gonna check out the 6-speed conversion, and the supercharger.fromchips out there for it?

Welcome to the E38 club, dude!
Note: Koala motorsports offers a 6-speed conversion, using the trannyL),an 850. Way, way, way cool. Consider getting the 740i Sport (not theunless you need the extra legroom in back. Then again, you could getE38isI'll750, and then get the six-speed, and slap on a supercharger, and have a
gorgeous q-ship that will smoke the 512TR.... :-)

Nervous? Of course not! In fact, hopefully by the end of the day todaybe the proud owner of a 2001 Black/Black 740iL. My car broker neighboratonandManheim right now looking at one. If you can't beat em, join em. :)
I'm sick of having to valet park my Hummer at the Four Seasons downtownbargainwalk every time I have a meeting in one of those Seattle skyscrapers,
because none of the other downtown parking garages have high enough
clearance. The 740 will be a much better option when I don't feel like
carboning up my engine by sitting in traffic, and I think they are aat 20K for a fully loaded model that's only a few years old.
Now I just need to figure out how to install the keypad ignition likethetrollTransporter....

Not poor Dave, it's Killer Dan that got a number from the smokin'
hottie waitress. Think of ripe mangos about to burst in the warm sun,
filled with succulent juices. I would describe the girl as - well,
succulent.
Also Dave says those Eastern European club chicks DO know how to drive stick, just they can't shift a manual transmission!

this car?"
Dave: "Uh, it's not a manual, it's an automatic."
Ken: "Why an auto? What are ya, a commie?"
Dave: "No, um, my 355 is a stick and not a pu$$y-a$$ F1. But I
