Clyde is dead on.   My 1st BMW was a '81 320i that I bought with 210K on it.
It was an exceptionally well documented car.  I proceeded to drive it until
313K when the rear shock towers rusted through....All I ever did to it was
routine maint. and replaced a water pump.
Subsequent BMW's have been equally as flawless.  Many think its a ploy but
I've religiously followed their maintenance schedule and have rarely had any
issues with the cars I've owned.
FWIW, YMMV.
