DSP absolutely does SUCK!!! My tiny factory subs with DSP removed and
aftermarket amp TOTALLY BLOWS AWAY the M-Audio subs in the M5 with a stock
system.
Entire range from lows to highs. Again, ACTUAL side by side comparison -
my car next to an M5. The owner of the M5 was pissed. He hates it when my
car does something better than his (very rare)! Of course since his pockets
are deeper, he spent enough money in his audio upgrade knowing that I can't
afford too. Baby... Also my upgrade was free. Friend is an audio installer
and happened to have an amp lying around. I was also able to sell my factory
DSP amp to someone who's amp had crapped out. $$$ Efficiency in engineering
exists in audio too!

My buddy who is a service writer at the dealer regularly asks me to come by
and show my car for a listen to preferred customers before they drop a butt
load on an audio upgrade that would be limited by the factory DSP. Even Rob
Levinson with the 750 6 speed was pissed off by the factory DSP. He didn't
know that a relatively simple solution existed that would make his upgrade
sound
WAY better until I told him about it. Like I said, anyone in the Chicago
area is welcome to listen. I was going the route of a custom box etc. until
my audio buddy researched in detail for my car.

This is true of any audio system. Before any of you guys blow a ton of
money on subs and new speakers, upgrade the amp first to get a purer signal.
Th
en you go from there. It's amazing what you can do with relatively simple
upgrades AND decent stock speakers and factory sub. Use the same approach as
you would for modifying your car's powertrain.

Read upgrade on E38.org.

_DSP analyzed..._ (http://www.geocities.com/jyl087/dsp-analyzed.htm)

There are better details somewhere on the web but I'm too lazy to look for
you guys. You know how to Google!

Like I said, I didn't have to go very far to be satisfied in the audio
department. Leaves more money for things like more HP! I became frustrated
with
my audio system when the Chevy Cobalt I rented in Vegas with the factory sub
and satellite radio made my car sound like a Yugo. Now if a cobalt does
something better than your car, something is wrong!

DSP is not all that bad. It is not bandwidth limited in the low frequencies,
the limited factor is the tiny woofers used. The cool trick for E39's with
DSP is to add the M-Audio subwoofers (used in the M5). These dual 10" subs
(with dual voice coils) replace the dual 5" Nokia subs in the bandpass box
suspended from the rear deck. Simple swap. If they will fit in the rear
deck of the E38, I would go that route.
