He's not a novice by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to tell you how impressive it was to be in Karl Troy's wife's Suburban when he hustled it around Roebling Road in Savannah for a 'familiarization lap' on a track day. Chevy never had THAT in mind for that beast....

Similarly I got to talk to a Dodge SRT engineer at Roebling Road when they brought a Grand Cherokee SRT8 to the One Lap of American event there. When asked how she handled the track, he said "She's a big girl and she doesn't like to be pushed around."

last 2% out of the car."

That's an important point. You can definitely learn all you can handle from an instructor if you're a novice...maybe even a veteran of a few events. I was thrilled to have an instructor that drove T/A professionally teach me in my car.

What's the most ridiculous car a novice has brought to the track?

With some of the structured track days, I always wondered how
much help an Acura Integra driver could be instructing in a Mustang?

Speaking for my own club, our instructors have lots of experience, and have
driven and instructed in many cars. So we typically don't have someone who
somehow only knows how to drive an Acura Integra. I do try to make
instructor/student pairings that "make sense", but a good instructor can
instruct in virtually any car. Also of course we're typically doing this
type of instruction to relatively novice drivers, who aren't wringing the
last 2% out of the car.
