Ferrari Mailing List: Re: 550 cost of ownership

I agree to an extend but how much of this stuff was really in need of 
maintenance? As opposed to "well while your in there".... I'm not saying that 
the owner was ripped off or that the repairs were not legit, but it does give 
me pause to see stuff fail with little or no mileage accumulated. Granted I 
have no idea how the car was treated when it was driven but never the less does 
seem excessive. Looking at the total that Michael Sheehan notes for ownership 
cost, it appears that about 20,000 of it was either warranty or personalization.

There is little doubt that exotic cars deteriorate rapidly if they are not
properly maintained. At the risk of sounding a bit like a snob (which I'm
not), it occurs to me that if low maintenance cost is the primary criterion
for buying a car, said buyer should probably purchase a Toyota.

Deduct the po's 160k miles and his 10 years. Still means:
440k miles - 40k miles per year - 40 mph ave - 
half a work year is 1000 hrs driving for 11 years. 
Yep, numbers check out

Mechanical reliability is assumed but the true accomplishment 
is 11,000 hours of dodging stoplight racers. That's incredible!
And it also means any fender-bender threatens instant totality on a 20 yo
car.
Yes, getting to 600k is a real feat.

(If you sense that I'm paranoid about cars hitting me your right...
I'm never the hitter but the hittee even been hit 4 times while 
stopped at a light)

Let's hope this celebration doesn't jinx it.

you're right Paul. I read about a guy that put 1 million miles on his 
pickup, but he was doing a 200 mile run daily in the early morning 
hours in a quiet rural area, not running around metro SEA in the

I've noticed that most of the articles in Sport Car market seem to lean
towards poo pooing Ferrari ownership in general. Why not publish an article
that is more objective about ownership costs? Guess that doesn't sell
magazines? Almost everything in that article was voluntary repair. The only
real issues were mostly covered by warranty. The ones that weren't were not
anymore money than taking a mercedes or some other high end car in for
service. I'd like to see an article from someone that has one currently or
just got rid of one.

You know, that is a good point, but voluntary or not, a $225K car should not
have the type of suspension problems that make you think, "I guess I should
replace that..."
