Michael: I was trained by FNA on the 328, Mondial, TR and F-40 in the 80's and worked at Big Red in Norman, Ok. Frankly, of all the Ferrari's and other sports cars I have worked on and owned, the 328 remains my favorite to drive. The balance is beautiful and the exhaust note is fantastic. I have never turned the radio on in mine and I have never driven it with the windows fully closed. It's a great car! I further note that I have never had anyone turn their nose up at it. Feel free to contact me if you need a reference for a reliable technician in Oklahoma. There are several I can refer you to. As Dennis pointed out a few days ago, there are still cars being made on Friday afternoons and Monday mornings. But the variations are small compared to the general reliability of an exotic. Getting back to the original theme of this e-mail chain, what is acceptable for an exotic in terms of reliability and maintenance is considered horrific and totally unacceptable for the average car buyer. For most people, in the first 100,000 miles of its life, a car should only need: tires once, brakes maybe once, oil change ten times or less, air filter change two or three times, windshield wiper changed a few times, add washer fluid, and maybe an automatic trans service. Anything else is considered extreme. So, I do believe that Ford, GM, Daimler Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, and others put reliability as a primary design goal. Because no one would buy a Honda if it broke down every 5K-10K miles or if it needed its engine removed every 30K to change the timing belt(s). Now, sometimes the designs fall short of their goals or parts get swapped without the expressed approval of the design engineers. Then bad things happen. Someone blamed poor reliability on Fords poor corporate performance. I actually think that Ford is hurting because Ford makes ugly boring cars. Yes, there are a few exceptions: the Mustang and its derivatives, trucks, and the GT. Have you looked at the Fusion, the Focus, the 500, the Crown Vic (ya, everyone has seen the insides of one of these), the Freestar minivan, the Edge, the Freestyle, and the Escape; YUCK! The Explorer and the Expedition are descent SUVs but the public still remembers the Firestone explode-a-tire fiasco. Ford needs to get retro and they are just starting to figure this out: the GT and the Mustang. I am worried that it is too late for Ford, most automobiles have a 5 year design cycle (from concept to manufacturing). They better have some cool cars in the pipeline. Look at Dodges car line up. Very retro. We just bought a Dodge Magnum SXT and I totally expect it to last and be reliable up to 150K and I expect it to die before it gets to 200K miles. Will it last this long, my Dodge pickup truck did and my Mercury Cougar XR7 did. The pickup has had one problem (change the catalytic converter every 80K) in 175K miles, and the Cougar's problems have been: cracked intake manifold (plastic), catalytic converter (it has 3 of them), TPS, and O2 sensors in 165K miles. Both the pickup and the Cougar still get driven regularly. The pickup's front suspension is starting to get a little bit sloppy and the Cougar appears to be down on power (it might be time for cats again; I will have to check into that). And to answer your question, yes, a late model Trans Am. It was a blast to drive. RE: [Ferrari] My Car Ownership History... I think the thing to remember is that you can't generalize a marque with regards to reliability. It used to be that a company would share a handful of drivetrain and electrical parts across different platforms. Nowadays, everything is outsourced and cars are made as partnerships with other brands. Japanese competition has forced a lot of cost cutting and other efficiency improving measures. This means that within each marque, reliability and durability can vary across different models. Would I buy any new Ford product? A truck or Mustang, maybe. I'd pass on most of the other Ford models. The Nissan V8 engine has had some problems, but their V series V6 is one of the most reliable engines in the world as is their KA series 4 cyl. BTW- The GT500 uses the 8.8 rear which can take up to 1000bhp easily. Who has driven a modern live axled car that was setup properly???? LS --- Dave Craig wrote: > Lash, > > No worries. My other cars have included a 1995 Porsche 911 turbo, 1999 Corvette and my pride and joy a 1968 Jaguar E-Type. I have anjoyed all of these cars and I still own the E-Type but I have decided to look for a 88'-89' 328 GTS, I thought this would be a fairly easy process since there are many out there to choose from but I am really struggling with this purchase. I am in Houston Texas so I decided this morning to go to Ferrari of Houston...big mistake, I might as well have been asking the salesman to look at a Kia because he instantly turned his nose up at me and said that he doesn't deal in these cars and the best place to look is Ferrarilist.com. I have heard this about the dealers that basically have the attitude that older Ferraris are the volkswagon of the line but I didn't expect to be scoofed at immediately...oh well, no harm no foul. So I am here... I have done my research (at least as much as I could find on the internet) but I have yet to find any owners to talk to in the area that can shed some light on who I can trust in Houston to inspect any prospective cars that I may find, or offer any advice on the 328. I am not limited to the Houston area, I don't care where the car is as long as it is within the continental US, which brings to mind another problem, if I buy a car outside the state who can I trust in whatever state I may be looking? I am not looking for the cheapest 328, I would preffer a car that I can trust and a car that is perfect or almost perfect. My budget is around $50K...now before you say...hey go look at the 348 or the TR, I REALLY like the style of the 328, nothing against the other models but they are just not for me at this stage. I like the older styling and the lines of the 328. The only other problem I have is that I have never driven a 328, I have looked everywhere to try to test drive one but the only opportunities I have seen have been out of state and with my schedule that makes things a little tough. Any advice? Do I have to buy the latest model to be accepted??? ------------------------------ Message: 6 Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 13:05:56 -0500 From: Dennis Liu Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Looking for help To: "'Stulberg, Michael'" Cc: 'The FerrariList' Message-ID: <45b8f17d.60abc570.72f2.ffff85b6 [at] mx.google.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Michael, one of our more illustrious and prodigious posters, Dr. Ken Rentiers, will surely weigh in shortly. Dr. Ken resides in Houston, used to own a 328, and will be a very valuable resource for you, I'm sure. And you'll also get a bunch of other responses about the 328, especially from the legendary and semi-mythical clyDe (TM), who will opine that the 328 is the most reliable Ferrari ever built, and you should be proud to own one. And then a bunch of others will jump in echoing that opinion. Then the topic of pricing will come up, which will be divided broadly into two camps, which I'll call the clyDe (TM) camp, which will argue that $25k-$45k will cover the spread, while the other camp, which I'll call the Buxton camp, will argue that the real spread should be $40k-$85k (and Buxton will point you to the one he has for sale). And you'll get a bit of noise along with the signal, but that's what makes Flist fun. Oh, and re your question about being accepted: yes, it's a common attitude at the dealership, but don't let that discourage you. It's no different than going to a Porsche dealership and asking for help finding a 944 Turbo. They'll stare at you, as that's now a 15-20 year old car and superceded by multiple new models. As for acceptance in the "Ferrari world", no worries - most Ferrari communities are very open to owners of all vintages. === message truncated === --------------------------------- Cheap Talk?
