Hello Friends,
Quick comment on this year's F1 race at Indy.
Because of experience, I was assigned to the pit-in
flag station, just up pit road from the pits. I
worked this station except for F1 qualifying where I
assisted the FIA folks scrutinizing the cars after
their hot laps. Pit-in is a fun assignment!
It was really hot everywhere, even in the shade.
Air temp was about 95F and track temperature exceeded
130 F. This was my 6th year to work the race and
without doubt, the hardest. In fact, I had been
fighting a stomach bug all weekend. Friday and
Saturday were okay but something less than fun. (Ever
try to get out of a full-body jump suit in a hurry -
if you catch my drift?) Sunday morning my 'bug'
peaked and I let my self get a little dehydrated. The
result was that I worked the first two races but then
went down hard(along with another few marshals) before
the F1 race. :-( I watched the F1 race on TV feeling
guilty as my fellow marshals suffered in the sun. It
was a little reassuring to learn that I was not the
only seasoned marshal to succumb to the elements.
