It is to reduce polution. Aussie cars had it too.

The biggest difference  the electronic ignition made was below 3000rpma,
actually. Much more power and much smoother. It's just the advance at idle
that I found odd, but now that's been clarified.

I had always believed that the dual-points setup was a trick for the US-spec
cars to reduce emissions at idle.  Perhaps not.  We learn.
