An afterthought:
If indeed a transplant were reasonable, maybe the transaxle from a C5 or C6 Corvette could be a donor?

The 456 gearbox is a transaxle. You can't simply go to the local speed shop and buy a tranny much like you would for a Camaro. And even if you could find something that would fit in place of the transaxle (remember, many transaxles also serve as mounting points for various suspension bits.....), modern cars are integrated to an extent that you will have to deal with the various drivetrain electronics and engine ECM.
Not something that I'd want to try.
