I only watched the last two laps and it was pretty entertaining. Funny to see Gordon fold while in the lead...and that crash wasn't Montoya's fault from what I saw.

And if (as in my case), it turns out you don't go for overnight excursions in the car, you also don'ta need luggage. For a variety of reasons -- mostly available time -- the only occasions on which I have gone somewhere overnight the last few years I have either travelled by air, gone to track events (where I've tracked a different car -- sorry), or visited New York Ciry (where I think it's crazy to take the car. So the luggage remains, waiting, in the closet. Sure, I probably need to get more of a life and drive off for at least a weekend locally.

Hello Peter - looks good to me. It is the insulator that we look at to see
what's going on. The carbon soot is normal of a motor driven about, idled,
then shut down. Now if the insulator looked like that - or heaven forbid
was bright white - a sign of too lean or the plug is too hot - then you may
have a problem. Champion plugs used to have all sorts of charts to use
going from good to bad to ugly. The worst one? No insulator left - just a
gnarled mass due to detonation.
DOUG
ps - nice picture - good close up detail. What type of camera?

I think we're back to the age old question, why have something if you're not
going to use it? Many years ago this list would chastise Ferrari 'OWNERS' ie
those that are not Ferrari 'DRIVERS'! Seems like some may have become
Ferrari OWNERS not touching and even hiding our stuff? I still say shame,
shame if you've got it use it. What are you saving it for, someone else!

I bought my GT4 in April to drive! I put 2,000miles on it before some kid hit me. Its been in the shop coming up on 2 months now.....ill try my damndest to make up those miles before the snow flies here in Indiana! :)

That being said, I do see why guys like Rob Garven and a couple others maintain their cars at the level they do. They have pristine examples that do get driven and shown, but to buy an average Fcar and not drive it just because its a Ferrari is ridiculous! These are cars people, go get coo coo for coo coo puffs and drive them like you stole 'em! (oh yeah, I stole that!!!)

Thank You

Hey Peter,
Everyone and his brother will have opinions on this
issue but I'll add mine.

First of all, a plug-cut should only be done (read:
only be interpreted) from plugs that have not been
subjected to recent idle. That is, the technique
says: Go for a spirited drive and at the last second
of that drive, cut the engine WITHOUT allowing it to
idle - not even rolling into the garage. The carbon
build-up comes from idleing and that can preclude an
honest read of the plug. This site has a good
write-up on the idea:

http://www.centuryperformance.com/spark.asp

Don't forget to go to page 2 where there are more
pictures.

Your picture shows an insulator that is about the
right color, perhaps a little too cool (read: it isn't
staying hot enough to burn off deposits). The ground
electrode color isn't too bad either. Still, I would
expect the whole thing to be a dusty tan color if
everything was balanced properly. The black carbon
around the base of the plug is not too much of an
issue with me. It says that you may be running a
little rich. Still, a little rich 11:1 to 12:1 is a
more powerful charge mixture than the perfect 14.7:1
ratio. We must also remember that a leaner mixture
burns hotter. Conversly, rich mixtures burn cooler.
Therefore, air-fuel ratio or 'mixture' must be matched
to the plug heat range.
Then there's compression ratio. That too changes
burn rates. Higher pressure charge is harder to
ignite therefore, a stronger ignition is required.
Ferrari ignitions are arc welders so if you're running
a stock ignition, you're probebly strong enough
(assuming it is in good health).

Quick question: Do all of the plugs look similar or
is one bank different; or one plug different?

Okay, that's just some stuff to ponder. From this
and someone else's post with the 'right' answer,
you'll get the engine dialed in.

regards,

rick

1989 When Enzo died, that is when! It changed the world of Ferrari for me. Within a few months of his death I had people who I believe had less than no knowledge of the significance of either Ferrari the man or his automobiles call me and say" What can I buy to make money with", Why won't you sell me a Testa Rossa Testarossa to them.

I actually had some one sue not only my self but Ferrari and the
dealer for whom I worked at the time because I would not sell them a
Testa Rossa at the time we were beyond sold out and our "Good
customers" for whom we were selling to at list were selling their cars
at $100,000.00 profits and then wanting to buy another, FAT CHANCE.
He won his suit his contention being that I knew he wanted a
TR.........shit, I should have sued also, I wanted a lot of
things....but I always thought that if you wanted some thing and could
afford it you stepped up raised your hand put your money on the table
   and took your turn.

Shortly after that we ( the dealer ) said sorry folks we know you have
waited two years but if you want it, ante up a 100k premium. Not
a whole lot of fun for the guy who had to look a friend in the eye and
say that. Shortly after that I left the business.

Now I sell what I can when I have a customer to whom I enjoy talking
with. I do not just make a market in Ferrari but I love cars be they a
Ferrari or a Henry J. They all have their own significance, emotional
   ties and devoted followers.
Don't ever tell a man who seeks a 51 Plymouth Cranbrook station wagon
that he isn't going to make money, help him find his car.......He
   knows what moves him.

Thanks for listening,..................and thank you ROL

   Phil

The SECOND rule of Italian driving! I LOVE IT!

And I believe it calls for a top 10 rules! That alone could be a mug!

Post your nominations, and figure out a way for us to vote online. And if I
can't figure that out, I'll just pick them myself. :)

Then I'll make a Caf? Press mug!

two things I like about Zymol - the smell and it doesn't leave white on
rubber. Well, maybe three - it looks good for one car show.

Rick asks "Quick question: Do all of the plugs look similar or is one bank
different; or one plug different?"

GOOD point Rick - for all intents and purposes, the gt4 engine is really two
4 cylinder engines held together by a common crankshaft and cylinder block.
