Re: help with new computer Vista or XP? NFC

Vista issues are overblown.

I got a new laptop back in January, loaded Vista Ultimate (corp release,
before OEMs and retail had it), hated it because of the driver issue you
mention, went back to XP.

But bought another new laptop in June, upgraded to Vista Ultimate, and have
had little to no trouble with software or hardware since. A really old
scanner lacks drivers, but still works, and Nero wants be to buy the new
version, but everything else works.

Bottom line, you can get away with XP, but if you're buying an "almost top
spec" Dell, you'll end up putting Vista (or wanting to) on it in 2 years
anyway. So suck it up now, as doing a clean install/buying it loaded is
much easier than trying to install later.

Benefits-wise, Vista has few noticeable advantages unless you're a total
geek, but it does run somewhat more reliably and will run noticeably faster
once software companies catch-up.

Vty,

Subject: [Ferrari] help with new computer Vista or XP? NFC

I hate to do this on the ferrari list but lots of you guys are techs and I
am
not!

I need to order a new home computer. Usually get a almost top spec Dell.
Have
just found out that Dell UK only offers Vista on the machine I want.

I have heard lots of stories about problems with Vista not working with
older
software/hardware. I dont want to buy new printers and get new software for
all the cameras/printers/scanners ect.

Anybody have any thoughts on Vista now that its out 9 months? Would software

made for XP automatically not work with Vista? Its going to be a new
machine,
do you think I will have fewer problems?

Anyway to get XP still on a top of a line new computer or should I take the
chance?

Help!

Many thanks
Britt
