Quite easy. Remember that they were NOT racing -- they were behind a safety car. If the weather had rapidly cleared and the track surface started to clear, then every team except the two red cars would have had to pit for intermediates. They also would have had to either load up on fuel, or make another stop for fuel. And all that would add up to a major advantage.
