Howdy,
So,...in the end it has come to a decision based on the financials, as it must. Even so, I hope someone can save that Mondial. Hate to see any great old car left to rot away. But it won't be the 1t and certainly not the last one to do so.
But, with the price of parts what they are, it's a good decision. I guess it would only be a viable project if the seller would let you have it for $3k or less. You know, you could make a low ball (actually more realistic) offer. As the owner sits and watches his Ferrari sit and slowly get covered by snow this winter he may get a twinge of realism and decide $3k isn't so low after all - especially since his perceived value will go down with each pasing day. And you could end up with a car that putting $10k into makes some sense.
Good luck - BTW, I'm slowly restoring my 67 (actually a 66) MGB Roadster. Even a simple car like the B is incredibly complex when it has been totally stripped. I'm putting a new wiring harness in now along with the windshield, dash with instruments at the moment. The carpet and new seats are next. Then I'll *only* have a mountain of work remaining - take care -

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies they just re-enforced what I already thought. I
did not take any pictures but I probably made it worse then it really was.
I am going to pass on it although I wouldn't mind a project (restored an
1971 MGB years ago), I don't think I have the time to devote to this. I
have always enjoyed reading this list (even the rants) and I have learned a
ton from you folks. Thanks again!!

http://lists.ferrarilist.com/mailman/options/ferrari/bigheaddennis%40gmail.cI agree with Dennis. I wouldn't go further than $8k or so though. Having restored a 308GTB (in cooperation with Ric Rainbolt) I can tell you that if you restore it, you will have up to twice its restored value invested. Then again, I have done just that(multiple times)because the fun-factor can have great value (to me). Therefore, Big D's suggestion of cleaning up the cosmetics and fixing/stabilizing the mechanical things that can cause catastrophic failure - will give you a fun ride at a manageable price. Then you can still part it out and recover your costs!

Gut check, I think that you could probably part it out fairly easily for $10k at least, given it's a QV engine. I bet the guy will take $11k-$12k.
If you're just looking to get it running, and drive around next summer with the top down and enjoy it, what the hey, it's topless fun for Miata money. When you're done, sell it for what you've put into it, or part it out, what have you got to lose??

Hi,
Been reading the list for 8+ years but have never posted. I went to look at a 1985 Mondial Cab today that was advertised as not running. The body was ok, some weird small dents on the drivers side by where the top mounts and some rust spots starting to show. The paint on the car was fair to poor, the top could have been better, the leather was cracking, the center console was lifting by the switches. The car did turn over but it did not fire. Could not smell any gas. The seller has changed plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump (said he spent $1300 on parts) but could not get it started. It has been sitting for at least this summer. The seller stated that the car ran fine last year until it was parked and after winter (stored outside but covered) it would start then quit. The car is in Mass and has not had an inspection since 2003. Carfax shows no accidents but does show evidence of mileage rollback. It went from 67,000 in 1997 to 36,000 in 1999 when sold at auction. Currently is says 47,000. So with all the red flags waving and since it wont start I cant get it to a ghetto, what do you think this car is worth? He is asking 15k I was thinking 8k at the most. I wanted to get a project car (looking for a 308/328) but this one seems to need more work then I want to throw in to it (plus money).
thanks
