I changed to Zerex G-05 about 2 years ago - 50/50 with distilled water. I'm back to using the old green stuff which I plan to change yearly.

Tom -

The water pump repair and timing belt replacement alone would have cost approx. $4300.and the additional items added approx. $2600. to that. (Had I not supplied the Mobil 1, brake fluid (LMA), and Freon R-12 it would have cost about $400. more.) I chose to have the work done at a dealer since I've recently had several negative experiences at independent repair shops - F-car and other marques. The TR was in the shop for about 2 weeks.

Fwiw, most water pump problems are due to leaking seals not failure of the pump to circulate coolant. My TR was cooling just fine, but replenishing the coolant and cleaning it up from my garage floor was becoming a pita. I did send an email to Zerex detailing the failure and offering to send them the old seal for analysis.

For the ultimate irony, I dropped off my wife's XK8 at the dealer on the way to reclaiming my TR; reason, leaking water pump.

Marty,
Holy moley. Er, if I may ask, what did all that cost? I have a
figure in mind, obviously a guess, but if you don't mind...How long was it
in the shop/off the road? Did you experience cooling difficulties which

led

to the service initially? I remember back in the dim past when my water

pump

went south and I paid (to me) the ridiculous sum of ~$400 for another one

the departed 'Mario'.
Thanks, Marty.

P.S. How many miles do you drive it per year, approx?

Getting ready to reclaim my '87 TR from FoNE this afternoon.

A leaking water pump seal prompted a modified major service that included:

* Rebuild the f*ing water pump (which was rebuilt less than 12K
miles ago)
* Flush coolant (Zerex G-05) and replace with Shell std green

antifreeze

  * Rebuild the alternator, upgrade its rectifier bridge, and replace
    the plastic fan with a metal one
  * Clean the clutch dust from the starter's pinion shaft and install
    thread inserts (not Heli-coils) in its mounting holes
  * Install stronger rear brackets for the belly pan
  * Replace a bad coil lead
  * Replace one distributor cap and rotor and both caps' cork gaskets
  * Replace timing belts and tensioner bearings
  * Clean both throttle plates and adjust baseline mixture and idle
  * Repaint the cam covers in situ
  * Heli-coil oil sump plate
  * Flush brake fluid
  * Change oil and oil filter - Mobil 15W-50

I wonder if the highly praised G-05, which I switched to about 2 years
ago, might have caused the pre-mature pump failure. I'm considering
sending the carbon seal to the Zerex folks for analysis.
