Shotguns make a helluva mess. Once in the ER we admitted a farmer who
tried to end it all by sticking a .410 in his mouth and pulling the
trigger. The most efficient way to do this is have the gun at an
angle of about 45^ so it takes out your brain pan. But this guy had
the barrel nearly on vertical, so it just blew off his face instead.
Now instead of being a depressed farmer he was a depressed pumpkin -
not a good trade imho.

In my 7 years with APD, I was involved in only 1 shooting up close and personal. I was driving, chasing 2 S&L robbers and we were going Code 3 @ 80 mph. The guy in the passenger's seat stuck a .22 pistol out the window and pointed it at us while we pulled along side. Bad move on his part. My partner grabbed the shotgun from the holder between us and racked a round. His 1st shot blew out the rear tire of the suspects' car. In the pictures I took after it was all over, you can see 9 holes in the rear fender where the OO-buckshot hit. The next round hit the passenger full in the face, killing both he and the driver with that 1 shot. Not a pretty sight. Since I did a lot of photo work for the Her-Ex, I always kept my Nikon in my briefcase on the back seat, and I still have a couple of my photos from that day. This may sound strange to those who haven't experienced this kind of situation, but when I got home and stopped shaking, I showered, ate a great steak, and had some of the
best sex I ever had I was so jacked up that I couldn't even sleep that night. Later I talked to some other officers that had experienced police shootings that resulted in the same outcome and they said that they felt the same way that I did. God, it was great to be alive.

I think the 1st movie I saw that seemed realitic as far as people getting
shot was Private Ryan followed by Band of Brothers. A hit was shown as if a
buckt of blood had exploded a la S Peckinpaw but a puff of cloth exploding
from the jacket filling of the person hit. And as ou said, like cutting the
puppets' wires - drop like a sack of potatoes.
I heard the cast of Pvt Ryan spent a week in the field under the guidance of
a combat vet whose plan was to show what life in the field was really like.
After 24 hours of rain the crew was ready to quit but T Hanks got them
together and asked if they really thought they knew what was being taught.
They all stayed the full week but weren;t very happy. It's pretty rough
camping out for a week when you;re a millionaire used to a life of luxury.
But the result was worth it IMHO.

So much for realism. Short of getting hit with a .50 cal (which just
tears
body parts off) the only thing you see when most folks get shot in real
life
is just watching them drop, like someone just cut the strings on a
marionette. I've seen very few movies get that right, which in a way is a
good thing.

the
movies. I recall the first time I saw one of his cowboy movies and some
dude gets shot in the saddle - none of this ohhhhhh, you got me pardner
stuff - no sir - they tied a rope to the guys waist over a pulley and the
other end to a 50 gallon water drum. Guy gets shot and they drop the
water
drum 10 feet. Jerked that actor off that horse faster than you could
see.
