The article said<<stop admiring men who drive sports cars >>

Guys,

You are spending far to much time debating this non-issue. The article was
more about class war here in the UK that the British love to think still
exisits (in the media at least) and not about anything more. I read it and
what you
see between the lines is nothing more than an attack on people who own nicer
cars ( supposedly rich as well ).

The UK loves this type of thing. I am constantly told by people here that
they hate the view of anybody who has anything nice or has done well for
themselves must be a criminal or have stolen from somebody. These same people
then
say how nice the attitude in the USA is....(Then they ask me why I would move
here from Florida but that's another story....)

The UK is going to save the world and show everybody how to set the standard
on the "carbon footprint". This will impress the rest of the world so much
that the respect will bring back the empire.....

Of course the reality is that there is nothing we can do to change what the
CO impact is without taking every civilisation back 200 years and that isn't
going to happen.

I believe there is some truth in the global warming thing but I don' believe
we are going to stop it. Technology is the only way to overcome. Furthermore
when all the laws about specific energy/carbon reduction come out just
remember the same self-serving politicians who are making these laws are only
interested in their re-election and not for the "good" of mankind. You can't
remove the CO threat without completely halting and reversing the effects the
developing world (from Brazil, Russia, China, India, and later on Africa) is
having AND winding back our own clock. And that friends is never, ever going to

happen. So technology will be the only answer.

And you no what? Technology has some pretty interesting ideas coming out.
Over here cars are taxed on the CO2 they emit so lots of people go for smaller
engines thinking less CO and thus less tax; however since the law has come out
the Germans (and others) have done a heck of a job developing engines
(diesel in particular) to be cleaner.

case in point- BMW: the new 635d has a twin turbo, 3.0l diesel engine,
282bhp, 427lb torque and 39.2 mpg. 0-62 in 6.6 and its quiet. CO2 is 190g/km.
These numbers are more than 20% better than the last engine (that I have in my
car which emits 225g CO, has less hp and less torque.

Compare this to the Caddy CTS V6 3.6 h is being sold here (2008). 0-62 in
6.3 so its quicker if you will notice 3/10 of a second BUT 311 BHP, 275lb,
torque, 264g /km CO2 so the tax and emmisions are higher by a heck of a lot
(the
difference in your tax bill will be huge!) Oh and the Caddy is 200 kilos
LIGHTER than the BMW.....

Point is, n order to sell cars here BMW had to make their cars cleaner yet
still be slick as S**t off a shovel and that's what tech will bring us.

I don't think the 35mpg by 2020 rule in the USA is even remotely a big  deal;
they should be doing that NOW. Whats bad about it? Who wants a car that gets
25 mpg (except for the people buying the above mentioned Caddy.....

Oh and the obvious comment on the article that started off this long boring
rant of mine is that Ferraris as we well know travel very few miles relatively
every year to the millions of other everyday cars so the point of the
article was pointless in terms of "green issues" and was more of a dig at the
rich
(or perceived rich...I use to be rich till I started paying for fuel in a V12
Ferrari!). Imagine the fuel burnt by trucks and boats...

Remember folks, if you stop flying to conserve your carbon footprint the
plane will still go without you!

And that's all from me folks...have a happy and safe Christmas whereever you
are going.
