I took a couple shots this morning at some coyotes in my back yard. Does
that count? :)

I've also stood in my driveway with my across the street neighbor, both of
us with 12ga shotguns, as we "cleared the air" of mud-slinging, next
building starlings.

Then we walked over to his house and did the same. :)

Personal "protection" with firearms comes in all shapes and sizes. :)

Thank you for asking that, John. I was wondering the same thing last
night before I went to bed, but I thought I'd hold off on posting until
"tomorrow".
In my situation, I'd never handled any weapons, being born in Chicago,
living there until I was 9, then moving to the suburbs (Arlington Heights).
Funny, but in Chicago, living in a 4th floor walk-up, I never had any
problems with "bad influences" from other kids, no gang members, etc. Didn't
know any swear words, etc. First day at the new school in Arlington
Heights, there was the word "chit" written in white chalk on the red brick
underneath one of the grade school windows. But I digress. Just thought
that was ironic.
Wife Karen got a CCW in Arizona, ex son-in-law was a Cochise County
deputy and a "gun nut", introduced us to a number of different weapons, took
us shooting, taught us the safety aspects of guns, handling, etc. Friend
used to go elk hunting, invited me and another guy to go out to a range near
Bisbee to sight in his hunting rifle, very nice piece with a beautiful
scope, that was very much fun. Another old school chum now living in Ada,
MI has a huge gun safe, loads all his own ammo, etc.
But, I never personally felt the need to carry or even own a gun. I
admit, they're fun to shoot (everything from a bolt action .22 to a 12 gauge
to pistols, rifles) but I just can't see myself "carrying" a weapon. I
don't know if I'd be able to shoot someone. Now, yeah, someone came at me
with a knife, okay. But when does that happen?
Closest thing to that was just a few months ago. Co-worker decided not
to park in the free parking lot provided to employees of the Tulsa World, as
some cars had been broken into, so friend Dale decided to park on the street
a block or so away. On the way to his car after work, he was walking toward
his car and up the sidewalk a bit, heading towards him, were several youths.
I saw the situation and, having already gotten to my car, drove over to him
and stopped, lowered my window, and started talking to him, asking him if he
needed a ride or any other kind of assistance. Because I was there, the
youths continued on their path, and after they had cleared the area, I drove
slowly with my friend the short distance to his car.
Once when I was young and "socially active" I was with a friend in
Lacrosse, WI and all of a sudden, appearing out of nowhere, were two other
guys, we were standing facing one another, and before I knew what was
happening, my buddy was pummeling his adversary, the poor guy's friend ran
to help, and I was after him, then the cops came. But, no weapons of any
kind. Maybe I've just been lucky, I did have some martial arts training and
was repeatedly admonished, "Never walk towards a fight."
So, sorry for the long winded post, but I've been pretty quiet
lately, thought, since it was early, I'd burn some bandwidth. Anyone ever
used their weapon, and what were the results?
