And when you do replace those little fuel hoses feeding the carbs and the emission stuff, don't use the (correct) braided type. They can crack underneath the braid and you will never know it (other than smelling gas and not being able to find where the smell is coming from). Use the regular rubber fuel hose. Bob -- jimshadow [at] verizon.net wrote: My 74 308 had all of the fuel lines replaced prior to my purchase. What was not replaced, however, was the 5'' fuel filler hose and the 1'' verticle hose to the left tank on the fuel reclamation system. I replaced the filler hose right away which was quite rotted, but did not notice the other. Well, it leaked raw fuel all over the top of the left tank right after filling her full. THANK GOD it did not ignite!!!! I changed that hose immediately and now regularly inspect my hoses and clamps. I don't expect any issues moving forward. Check those hoses!!! NOBODY with a 308, especially a carbed car should be running original hoses! If you are, you're asking for a fire. Here is the real reason that 308's catch on fire, and it relates to ALL 308's and even the hailed 328: 1) Check the fuel filler neck hose. This the short 5" hose between the fuel filler neck and the left gas tank. It can rot out, and leak gas...and it will fall right onto the hot exhaust manifold and "blammo" fire! Why carb cars mostly? Simply because they are old, and the first 308's made. The problem can occur right up to the 328. Have all the fuel lines inspected and replaced (there are lines between the two tanks that can leak too)...even the newest 328 is 19 years old now. The oldest 308GTS is 30 years old (1978). 2) Ferraris are unique in that they have two ignition systems, one for each bank of the V8. When you lose the ignition in a typical car, the car dies, and you pull over. In a Ferrari if you lose only half the ignition, the car will continue to run, but at very reduced power. The other side bank that is not running is still receiving fuel, which is spit into the exhaust manifolds and runs down to the superheated catalytic converter. And guess what? Fire! But again, this can happen on any year Ferrari with twin ignition and catalytic converters. -----Original Message----- From: clyde romero [mailto:clyderomero [at] worldnet.att.net] Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2007 10:21 AM To: dave [at] davehanda.com Cc: 'The FerrariList' Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Looking to buy a Ferrari Listen the 328 is the best car for the money hands down. If you want a car fire buy a carb car. If you want a car to drive and have fun and is cheap to run and work on get a 328. Much better car. I see no advantage to the QV 308. Does anyone else? Being me, I'd much rather have a carbed 308 than either of the above. If it is a low mileage garage queen, figure on spending $6K the first year replacing anything that moves (or is supposed to move). Either that, or leave it as a garage queen and do nothing. If it is a regularly driven example, figure on spending $2K the first year. Bob '78 308GTS '01 Corvette Z06 -- <georgedodson [at] comcast.net> wrote: I am new to the list and have a question. I have never owned a Ferrari but have been in love with them for many years. The cost was always too high, so I specialized in English sports cars. I recently sold my 1959 Jaguar XK 150-S, which I had restored over many years, and am in the market for a Ferrari. I had my heart set on a "reasonable price, reasonable condition, reasonable mileage" 308 GTS QV. Reasonable means ~20k-45K mi, $35-42K and recent Major Service with a clutch change for higher mileage cars. Unfortunately, there seem to be very few if any, available. One requirement is Red exterior with Tan or Bone interior. I have found a number of reasonably priced 328 GTS cars with the correct color and matching the reasonable price/mileage/condition criteria. I am looking for advice. Should I hold out for a 308 GTS QV or re-align my thinking and go for a 328 GTS? If you like, you can reply off-list. Thanks.
