That is the major upgrade to the next gen Blu-Ray player - internet
access and internal memory to store downloaded movies or features to
movies being played. Expected in stores before this summer.

I think Blu-Ray was actually the better technology here. It is
surprising... Beta vs VHS is a good study in bad marketing, Sony
really did
have a better standard in Beta than VHS (better image quality,
cheaper to
make tapes and players). They just refused to allow the adult film
industry
to use Beta as a media... And Beta died...

I still can't sort out how Intel became number one in
Microprocessors(x86)
and controllers (8051)... Their design for its day was crap
compared to
most everything else. Probably marketing also.

Still who wants to actually buy a movie and have a disc laying around
somewhere? It just seems primitive, I'd rather pull it down over
the air
when I want to watch it (and have it paid for by the advertisers who
stick
commercials in front of movies at the theaters as a retro-active
punishment
for doing that to me after I paid $9 for a mediocre at best movie)...

Though I admit it is a good excuse to buy a PS3...

Harrumph - I bet the whole dang thing is a rehash of 45 rpm (best
fidelity -= under the circumstances) v 33 1/3 by Colombia (here -
put a
whole hour on one of these). and Beta (the best video, under the
circumstances) v VHS Dunno why that one won out. Ayep - Once all this
computer stuff gets sorted (sordid?) out I am going to trade in my
386.
Until then, I'm just holdin' on.

I doesn't seem all that long ago, when I sold off of my Pioneer
"LASER
DISC"
player and some discs on eBay and bought a Sony DVD player, when that
format
was brand new.

Then, I sold that player and bought a new "upscaling" Denon unit w/
HDMI
out.

I've been waiting for the Blu-Ray/HD battle to get sorted out too.

I'll probably buy a Blu-Ray soon.

Went with Blu-Ray 6 months ago. With a 65" 1080p TV the pictures is
phenomenal. Not that much difference with a TV smaller than 42".

If you are thinking about making the move, at this point you, should
hold out until the next generation machines - with internet access -
come out. Not too far away, and they promise some "extra features"
along with downloadable "stuff." Even if you are not interested in
that extra flexibility, the prices on the current generation
machines
will fall.

Of course, wait a few weeks and the HDDVD players will be FREE as
EVERYONE dumps the format.

Anyone want a BETAMAX?

DON'T!

Looks like the end might be near for HD-DVD. Wal Mart just
announced
that
they will dump HD-DVD and stock Blu-Ray discs only, following the
footsteps
of Best Buy & Netflix. Rumor also had it that Toshiba is ready to
write-off
HD-DVD citing its failure. Basically, when the world's biggest
retail corp.
and those nation-wide electronic stores stop carrying your product

the hardware & software are doomed. Blu-Ray is likely to win this
HD-
format
war.

For those who bought a HD-DVD player...well, consider it as a
higher-
grade
DVD (regular DVD) player then. Meanwhile regular DVD machines lives
on and
with some selling as low as $25.00 along with a huge selection of
software,
looks like it will be here for quite a while."
