In the prologue to "Cars at Speed", Robert Daley wrote that 16 Grand Prix  
drivers were killed in the seasons from 1957-61, out of fewer than 60 active  
drivers during that period.  Not very good odds of getting to a comfortable  
retirement!

"Blood Sport" might be more accurate -- The  drivers were killed off pretty 
regularily back then -
