I am looking for the correct, generic replacement part for my '79 308GTB's A/C receiver-drier. I have found a source for NEW York compressors (US$315) so I can rebuild my A/C without conversion to a modern compressor. Yea, I can already sense the testarone in the air. "Take the damn thing off like a real man. It's just dead weight." But I live in Houston, Texas where we have two seasons; Summer and Almost Summer. And the 308 has a greenhouse for a cockpit. If the A/C doesn't work, I don't drive the car.
So back to the theme-topic. Any of you done A/C work recently who could direct me toward a parts supplier?
I assume you're trying to beat the price of a correct Ferrari part (like $300 @ ItalianCarParts.com)? Do you have any automotive A/C suppliers/parts houses in the area? Up here, I'd just drop into Northwest Air Conditioning with the old part and see if they can match it up with one that is the right dimensions and has the correct fittings.
A Goggle search shows these in Houston: http://tcw-us.com and http://alamoautoair.com
These guys (www.discountacparts.com) show an accumulator/dryer for $35. Search for Ferrari 308, click on York "Compressor". Shows a picture of the item so you can verify if it's correct.
There are brackets available to mount a modern Sanden 507 compressor on a York bracket. This is one. It's on a <gasp> Porsche site.

One on eBay:

A Google search of YORK SANDEN ADAPTER gave a number of results. Don't know if these brackets will work in just any car or if they are specific to certain models.
The pulley needs to line up, the compressor size needs to be matched to the rest of the system and your hoses would need to match up to the ports on the Sanden compressor as well.
I recently completely rebuilt the A/C system in my Golf. Bought a vacuum pump so I can charge the system myself using cans of R-12 (14oz cans for $20 on eBay). Also bought a A/C crimp tool so I can make my own hoses.
