I don't know specifically about the 400i, but a really good tranny mech can fix this in-car - w/o pulling the tranny. You unbolt the tranny, slide it back a bit, slip in a wrench to undo the torque converter bolts, slide the tranny a bit further, pull out the converter, and *viola*, you have access to the seal. I watched a true master of this proceedure do it many times. But the 400i may not have enough room to do it this way. Hans.
