I can match that wihout goinig back so far - As recently as 1995/96 the 
E-Class Mercedes with the then "new" common rail technology was seeing upper 
30s to low 40s MPG's.   Granted, to get 40+ the driver had to be *very* 
gentle with the loud pedal - but it was entirely possible.  The E Class is a 
mid-sized luxury car that's not turbo charged  which was upgraded until it 
became NLA in the US.

Last I checked they were reasonably priced - in the mid teens IIRC.  With 
diesel costs $4+ now they may still be low priced for the kind of car it 
is....
