Ahh, that's what I recall.  If I remember correctly, this thing ejected 
pilots downward - or am I confusing it with something else?

Yeah, F104 - the widow maker.  Some one quipped if you want an F104, buy an 
acre of land in Germany.  Guess these were NATO fighters.
