geologist out to see what, if anything, was there and what would the cost be 
to extract it.

Would you want them to extract oil that would require a pump price of $10 to 
be profitible?  Just like you working for a living requires you to make more 
than it costs else you;ll be bankrupt.  Same for the oil companies - unless 
you advocate the govt bailing them out like they did Chrysler and the 
borrowers who could not pay their loans?

Not every spot on earth has oil that can be economically extracted and sold. 
I don't have an oil well in my back yard and I doubt you do either.  Why? 
Because the electricity needed to run the pump would cost more then the oil 
I;d get.

Let's assume your deed includes mineral rights.  If I were to suggest you 
drill for oil in your backgroud what would you do?  If responsible you'd 
find a geologist familiar with oil bearing formations to study the earth 
under your house.  If theres oil you drill and hope he was right.  If not, 
do you drill anyway?

That's what you are suggesting the oil companies do -   drill regardess?  Do 
you own any mutual funds?  likely it/they have some oil company stock in 
them.   Are you saying you *want* your stock to go down?

I don't understand why you made that initial comment ---  perhaps you're a 
politician?
