Speaking of Jacks & Jack Stands - and Weight Ratings - is there a standard safety factor added to the rated weight? When we installed piping systems we usually tested the pipe hydrostatically to 150% of the pressure rating.

Also, with so much stuff made in China - and some being recalled for safety problems - lead paint on toys and such, are Chinese manufacturers held to some safety standard - hopefully the same standard US companies are held to?

I remember when Nafta was being debated there were people saying Mexican trucks would come acoss the border and roll on our roads without any safety standards - marginal or nearly non-existant brakes, no parking brakes, no standardized safety lights - and on & on.

On a semi-related note -

I remember when I was in Saudi and seeing trucks lit up like Christmas trees - rows of lights from one end to the other - all colors including red and green. It was hard to see brake lights and when in the towns they would overpower the street lights if viewed from certain angles.

Also - Saudi had a caste system - Saudi's were truck drivers because they were in the largest vehicle and were given the most right of way! Seems commanding the most weight got the most respect - which they viewed as prestige.

Western Europeans and Americans were managers and engineers, eastern europeans provided manual labor, Indian and Pakistani's cooked and cleaned, etc.

Sorry -- got off my point about safety -

Take Care,
Larry T

Is there any chance, in this era of advertising hype, that a floor
jack rated at 3000# actually means to be used on 3000# cars?
