Hey Larry (or anyone else out there): Does anyone remember when Enzo got into
(another) pissing contest with the FIA and was threatening to pull out of F1
and go to the Indy Series instead? Hell, he even built a one-off car to current
Indy specs. I think it was 1992. I saw photos of it, and it was beautiful. It
was an Indy car all right, but all Ferrari too, if you know what I mean, right
down to the Cavallino shields on the sides. I forgot whether it ever ran or
not, but the mere thought of Ferrari bolting to the Colonies, put the fear of
Enzo into the FIA, and they caved, compelely.

Reminds me of an old Hearld-Examiner friend, Steve Hearst, (great Grandson of
WR, who I worked with back in the days that he was learning the newspaper
racket. After learning the fundamentals of newspapers, the Corp. put him in
charge of Hearst Properties, a job that his dad once held.. They own millions
of acres all over the world.

Wanting to prove himself to Daddy George?and the big shots in NYC, he pulled a
scam on the State of California that brought tears to?these old eyes. They own
all the land down to the water?and around the Hearst Castle in San Simeon (the
ranch, as they call it). 80,000 acres in all. So Steve, brought in surveyors,
planners, lawyers, and architects and proceded to plan to build a large
resort/hotel right on the unspoiled ocean. I heard that all that cost just over
$1 million dollars?to do?that.

Of course when the State Coastal Commission heard about it, they soiled their
Lederhosen. The long and short of it was, that after a little over a year of
pissing and moaning, the State agreed to give Steve and the Hearst Corp. $100
Millon dollars NOT to build for the next 50 years.

That works out better than Hillary's foray into the Futures Market, don't it?.

No argument there!?? Seeing the last of the front engined cars running
(somewhat behind) them new fangled rear engined furrin things was great!??

?

I *was* poking a little fun at F1 and stock engines but it is a pretty good
idea.? I wonder how Ferrari would level the playing field - I suspect a custom
Ferrari engine would be miles ahead of a Ford crate engine.? Unless the Ford
was tweaked of course, but then you're getting back to the same place you are
now.? Maybe just give everyone a jegs.com or Summit Racing?catalog and tell
them they can buy anything in the?catalog!

?

On the other hand, F1 is a little like the US Gov - whenever there's a problem
the answer is always more regulations!? Then there's the simplified tax regs.
which always adds tens of thousands of words/pages to the regs??- That no one
understands of course.? ;-)

?

Take Care,
Larry T

Hey Larry: Don't laugh. I can remember when Dan Gurney came to Indy with stock
block Ford engines, stuffed into his Eagle chasis. And the combo was not only
competitive, but won several races. And that was in the time of 4-cam Ford Indy
engines and turbo-charged Offenhausers, etc.

I don't remember if those were the years of Andy Granitebelly's
Lotus/Wooshmobiles, but they were a sight ot see (but NOT hear) too. Who was it
that said, "if you can't find a loophole in the rules, or can't cheat without
being detected, you're just another LOSER!" God love Andy (with his STP logo
outfits, suit, shirt, and tie'), wherever he is.

Yea, Dan may have tricked?the Fords?out with Westlake-Gurney heads and F1 type
slide fuel injection, but the heart of the engine was still a stock block, cast
iron Ford.

I can only speak for myself, but that was some of the most exciting racing that
I've ever seen, bar none.

Hmmmm... maybe Chevy or a Ford V8? Hey, Jegs and Summit have them in
their catalogs! Maybe grab some 4 bbl Holly's too?

Why not run street tires? could probably get a deal on some re-treads!
