It doesn't take a lot of convincing for me --- First time I saw NASCAR drivers was at Riverside Intl Raceway in the mid-sixties. Ferrari Bubba had scored great working press passes. First time those dudes had been on a road course.
Lessee - Sporty car guys came with CanAm, a high class group.
Then USAC for the Rex Mays - a tough group whose motto was "eight wheels corners better than 4" and they didn't mind getting under a competitor and giving them the opportunity to go flying - - - over the wall. Then there was NASCAR.. Those guys were cool. First group I saw that could stick a cigarette in the hole where a tooth had been and carry on a conversation without ever touching it. Curtis "a new party starting in ten minutes" Turner - ayep - Read Stroker Ace - those antics REALLY happened. Bank shot off a motel wall into the swimming pool with a rental car. A backwards race to the airport and back - - - Just not to one guy. I recall Curtis drawling "it don't matter how good yer brakes are - - if yer upside down, they don't work worth a shit."
Fun group. heh heh
