You cannot have 64 bit multithreaded capability unless you use Vista. But some of your older programs will balk at Vista. If you want optimum performance on select programs use Vista. If you want no hassle, stay with XP. You didn't mention Ubuntu which may be the best of all worlds. Check it out.
