Main use will be for home apps like Quicken, Excel, otherwise I'll use it to
edit pictures, digital camcorder files, etc...   

I guess I don't really understand the difference/benefits of a 64bit os vs.
32bit os...

   What will you use it for?

   If you will use more than 2GB of memory AND drivers are available
   for the 64 bit O/S (Vista 64, not XP!) then go Vista 64.

   If not, go XP 32 (SP2 or SP3)

   PS: the sticking points are usually drivers for directly attached things
       that are a bit "old" - like printers and scanner and such.
