Hey Paul: The Salt Flats guys always think positive. Why take the time and
trouble to fabricate and install padding if you're not going to crash, right?

I never got to Bonneville, but used to go to Murock Dry Lakes out on the
Mojave on occasion. The So. Cal. Timing Assn. used to have runs out there, and
they were interesting to say the least.

My favorites were the old P-51 drop-tank Lakesters with a huge bored out OHV
V-8s stuffed inside the rear and a wheel at each corner. Nothing more. With
Go-Kart like suspension, they were clocked at well over 200 MPH. How did the
drivers fit inside the damn thing with those two huge stones getting in the
way? <g>

The lake-bed was smooth as a billiard table and had the consistency of
cement. I know. I took a spill out there once, riding my 250cc ex-Works CZ
Motocrosser. (My mother worked for the U.S. Suzuki competition dept, and they
sold
it to me for $400. Long story).

But, unlike the Salt Flats guys, I had prepared for any eventuality, and
worn my leathers. I'd seen too many other Kenny Roberts wanna-be's, clad in
only
shorts and a tee shirt being hauled off in the ambulance after a failed Evil
Knievel type jump. Anybody out there remember Rocket Rex Staton?

Ach, the memories, yer pal Ferrari Bubba

I found two pictures fascinating, underbonnet front end details
and the driver's seat. Crude aluminum plates no padding.
