Hi Guys,

Speaking of speed and driving fast, I was wondering how others deal with the phenonom of how driving at a high speed for a long period of time makes the brain see any lower speed as incredibly slow.

I used to commute weekly from central Va to western Md - enjoying some great roads and ocassional high speeds. Didn't have my 911 at the time and my MGB isn't really a high speed cruiser kind of car. But the MB sedan and our Malibu managed to run at 80 comfortably for as long as needed. Of course I wasn't doing 80 the whole time - usually it was 55-60 depending on the Smoky presence. Then, when I reached my destination at either end, I slow to around 35 for the exit and suddenly it feels like I could get out and *walk* faster! So, I'd go from (say) 60mph to 35mh or so and it would take several hours of driving around town to get out of that mental feeling of going so fast.

Anyone else find that feeling un-nerving? Got any good stories about becoming re-acclimated?

BTW, the opposite phenomon also occurs. I read about a sailor who had spent the previous 20 years living and sailing around the world. Finally settled down and needed a pickup. Was on latest drive and found himself screaming toward a stop sign!! Fearing he'd lockup and burn thru the intersection, he applied the brake *hard* and came to a stop - all the way down from his incredible speed of 20mph according to his passenger who couldn't stop laughing! Of course, after sending 20 years sailing at a top speed of roughly 6-8 knots, 20mph felt positively supersonic!!

Have a nice evening - Hump day is almost here! ;-)

Mike,

I'd like to say kids but to my mother's chagrin, no. When you are closer to the 2 century mark on a daily basis, you have to break the addiction. I'm glad I did. I am now sober... Plus it helps not having a car that is governed not to do so now and Jim won't do you a "favor"... Just kidding Jim - LOL.

I might be solving my slow car syndrom in a few weeks. I'm looking at several "F" cars right now as one of the possibilities. I've learned a lot from this list and my eventual purchase (and everyone's entertainment value!) is why I joined. I might be asking some questions on the list this weekend.

That is funny, Jim C telling you to slow down... Having kids really
changes things for you :)

No idea, this guy was down in Texas and it was many years ago (thinking
2004 maybe?). I won't say who it was, as I was instructing at the
event. He had a very nice 996 RTurbo at the time probably one of the
first in the country, and ran the advanced group. The guy just had a
complete disregard for rules in general, enough money to get out of
whatever trouble he got himself into I guess...

I have no problem with someone playing a bit on an open road with no
cars around, I mean its their life, they can risk all they want that is
a freedom of choice they make and they may have to live with the
consequences later (no one ever brags about how fast they were going in
the ER though). Driving like a DB with others around you is just
inexcusable though, no one has the right to put others at risk like
that. Not saying I never speed, at one point I could have wall papered
with the number of tickets I got... But I outgrew it, mostly.

Mike, are you talking about the same numb nut who took his 911 turbo backwards along the wall into turn 5 years back? If so, wasn't that his second turbo in 3 weeks that he wrecked?

Ah, the good old days when the roads were open and an "Escort" radar detector was all you needed. I do admit to exercising north of double the legal limit every now and then (now not doing it as often) but it's not the same anyway. I feel "guilty" nowadays. Highways are crowded at all hours around Chicago these days. The courtesy of slower cars to the right no longer apply and then there's a less trained driver in a more powerful car trying to keep up with you. It's not worth it anymore. Too dangerous and even more socially irresponsible than ever. My co-drivers in One Lap were glad we did it when we did it. We don't know if it would be as fun today.

I know someone asked about stories over long distances at high speeds. I have a few but I'm afraid to tell and being admonished for my terrible road manners of the past. You know it's bad when Jim C. threatens to put a speed governor on your car....

Back in the day a guy who ran the gumball rally in a

cage, but at that speed, something goes wrong, he would have been dead
or worse killed someone else. Same guy showed up at a DE once and was
kicked out in under 10 minutes for not following any of the rules
(safety rules) spun his car multiple times, passing in corners, no clue
really. Fastest anyone was ever asked to leave. Money and brains do
not always go hand in hand, this guy was clearly a trust fund baby.
