Before everyone goes out and tosses their tires because they have a few years on them remember that the big killer of tires is sunlight - and lack of care. If your car is garaged and not driven often the tires can last a number of years. Plus, they will offer some warning signs when they start to fail. The most visible thing to look for is cracks in the sidewall rubber. These are mostly caused by sun damage but can be caused by dry rotting also. A tire that is cared for will last much longer than one "rode hard & put away wet" - and left that way.

There are several things that should be done to make tires last out their lives under our cars and not in the landfill. 1st - Check the air pressure every week - 2 weeks at most. Your owners manual will provide mre details. 2nd - Examine the tires - on both sides - to look for unusual wear, damage and foreign objects.
3rd - Keep the wheels balanced and the suspension aligned properly.
4th - Keep the tires and wheels cleaned and treated with your favorite chemical if that's something you like.

Do the above and you can get a long life from your round rubber thingies.

Speaking of treatments -- I spoke with a Chem E about putting various spray/wipe-on products on things like dashes and tires. He felt they acted like a sacrificial surface that would take the brunt of the hardships and help the material underneath last longer. He didn't feel qualified to talk about brandnames.

I suspect most of the people on this list *especially* tend to put more effort into maintanence than the average Ford Focus owner. I've read of truly fanatic methods used to clean things that will keep our lovlies on the road.

I know some of you remove the wheels & tires to wash & wax them - and to make it easier to clean the wheelwells. That kind of care will keep the tires in very good condition for years to come.

I'm not saying your tires will last forever - but they can last a long tire if properly cared for.

Have a nice weekend - Now get out there and clean your tires!

Over 10 years old for a high performance tire, or any tire!! You're as good
as in the ditch or guardrail already.

Given the age of all 512s now, how was it ever allowed on the track wearing
its original rubber ?

All,

I think that Clyde is one of the people I most respect on this list.
His service to our country, knowledge and flying experience
astound me, however I would disagree with him on maybe this one issue.
Maybe among top tire models of the top brands
there may be little difference but I have first hand experience with
tires and have found out that you get what you pay for.
The tire patch holding us and our precious Ferrari's to the road is
smaller than the palm of your hand. The rubber compounds,
tread patterns, speed rating and build quality can make a difference
between life and death.

Just a few years ago a Testarossa running in an event some of you may
remember left the road at high speed and killed the
driver and his wife due to wrong tire speed rating and age, and the
512 that crashed recently in the northwest was riding on
its original tires possibly causing two more fatalities. I would agree
spend your money wisely but also wisely pick the shoes for your
ride. I bet there are some on this list who has a pair of shoes cost
more than a whole set of the most expensive tires available.

Also if your tires are over 10 years old change them. If I am not
mistaken it was a taire blowout that caause the crash of the last
SST?

Sincerely,

Rob
