I'm not following your logic here - either fuel economy is important, or it
isn't.  You can't tell me that it just isn't a strong factor in the buying
public's decision process.  Last time I checked, blowing through $80 per week
to keep a daily-driver on the highway was uncomfortable for the average,
Middle-Class consumer - those memories are still vivid.  Also, I don't hear
much about how having to stop for gasoline fill-ups every 300 miles was such a
thrilling, rewarding experience that people wanted to spend much more of their
free-time engaged in such an activity.

Furthermore, you're tremendously short-sighted if you think gasoline prices
will stay where they are for much longer - profits for the Oil companies were
MUCH higher when gas was $4 a gallon, and there are many market factors at-work
that will invite such price hikes in the near future.  A resurgence in the
global economy (boosting China's demand) and a return to speculative trading in
the Oil Futures markets virtually guarantees that gasoline will be getting
more-expensive in the foreseeable future.  If the past couple of years have
taught us anything, its that the Oil Economy doesn't always track basic
supply/demand indicators exactly.  Coupled with continuing uncertainty in the
Middle East and no new investment initiatives in refining capability, and I'm
not betting on the renewal of the SUV Era.  Sorry, that dog won't hunt no more.

It's obvious that you are not in the car business, because you
are out of touch with current reality.  Your mindset was correct
when gas was $4, but not now.

The public is fickle, and it can certainly shift back the other way
on a moment's notice.  But, currently, the gas guzzler is king
in the marketplace.  Tomorrow the Priuses may start selling
again, but not today.

What is bizarre is that most people seem to bury their collective
heads in the sand and fail to see that some of the worst offenders
are from Japan.  Have you any real world experience with fuel
mileage in a Toyota Tundra?  Or a Nissan Armada?  Not even
close to the mileage in an equivalent GM product.
