I think these changes are knee-jerk reactions. Gasoline goes up, people buy
little cars. Gas goes down, people buy powerful/big cars. This is all short
period oscillation. The real question is; What is the trend when measured over
a long time interval - and how does THAT correlate with other long-term
socio-economic trends.

As for the electric car thing, I think there are two metaphors that might
apply; In the '80s, buying a $2500 computer to balance one's checkbook.
Remember that logic? People actually offered that reasoning for their
purchases, when all they really wanted was a new hip toy. And buying the first
uber-expensive mobile (bag) phones, when what they wanted was a new hip form of
CB radio.

Electric cars seem hip, cool, rad, progressive, what-the-hell-ever. The only
thing cooler than owning one is to be seen driving one. That way others know
how hip, cool, rad, progressive, what-the-hell-ever you really are!
