Hey Dan,
I don't know why the govt doesn't take my suggestion - we can run a pipeline to the Sun and have all the power needed! Too hot when you get close to the Sun? Will melt the pipe you say?

Silly you - we can run the pipe at *night*!

(Sorry - old joke)

Exactly! Bathtubs kill more people than have ever been killed by nuke
power stations...
- something like 650 die in bathtub accidents yearly - often by falling... lots of hard surfaces in bathrooms - but NO one is picketing to make tubs
out of rubber, etc.

As much as I enjoy being clean, having cheap, non polluting electricity is a pretty high priority. If the Breeder Reactor being commercialized back in the early 80s had been allowed to continue we'd have a way to deal with
all the spent fuel being stored at various power stations across the
country. After spending $2.5 Bil on equipment and another $200Mil on
clearing, excavating, access road building and the nuclear mat congress, in their infinite wisdom decided we didn't need the power it would provide. To prove their stupidity some said in press release that "the electricity was not needed" so the project wasn;t needed. Well, Duh - the project was built
to prove it worked in commercial sizes and the tuerbine generators were
added to the project so all the heat produced could be used for *something* rather than wasting it. The project was NOT about producing electricity -
it was providing the concept was commercially viable.

Sorry, I get carried away - I was the Planner in charge of the early
construction and seeing all that equipment bought and then sold as scrap
(they were so unique most of the equipment was not usable in other
rojects) - such a waste.... Typical govt brainpower.

That project was killed in 1982 - ~27 years ago - we could have
numerous breeders around the country up and running now if it had been
allowed to continue. Things would be very different if the US was getting
78% of its power from nukes like the French do.

Right on Jim. A few terribly managed incidents (Three Mile and Chernobyl) and the technology is doomed? How many people have knives killed? Yet, we
can still buy them?

In fact, France is planning to build many more plants starting this year. As
much as I hate to admit it...they've got it right this time.

OMG.

Here we go w/ the "Oil companies supressed the Pogue Carburetor" theories.

Actually, the people responsible for the current "energy crisis"
are the liberal
moonbat environmentalists who have single-handedly stopped the
building of any
new NUCLEAR (or NUKE-U-LAR) Power Plants in the USA for the last 13 years.

France currently produces 78% of it's electricity needs via nuclear power.

The USA produces 19% of it's power via nuclear.

The only currently viable "clean" technology for vehicles is
electric - or plug-in
electric/hybrid technology - that requires (by definition) a
"clean" source of
electricity to "plug in" to.

The liberal moonbats continue to simply ignore the fact that
unless the source of
electricity is both CLEAN and VIABLE - and this means NUCLEAR
POWER - that you are
simply moving the production of "greenhouse gases" and pollutants
from the vehicle
tailpipes to the plant smokestacks.

(Neither SOLAR, nor WIND, nor HYDRO, nor HYDROGEN - are VIABLE on
any major scale - nor
will they ever be in our lifetimes or likely those of our children)

Of course, these same folks that are blaming "The Oil Companies",
are the ones that
voted in The Annointed One who is now shutting down the ONLY
decent high-level nuclear
waste repository this country has known, Yucca Mtn.

See, we can't "contaminate" the soil there - that we detonated
900+ nuclear WEAPONS
on, over, and under between 1951 and 1992. We might harm one of
the five headed rabbits
or 9 legged desert tortoises. ;)
